The Philharmonic Orchestra
2011-2012 Season
The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra is now in its 67th Season; the 2011-2012 Season is Music Director Larry Rachleff’s 16th with the Orchestra.
This season the Orchestra performs an eight-concert Classical Series with a roster of world-renowned guest artists, that includes pianists Ilya Yakushev, Joyce Chang and Alon Goldstein, violinists Alexander Kerr and Augustin Hadelich, cellist Alban Gerhardt, soprano Elizabeth Weigle, baritone Randall Scarlata and guest conductor Michael Stern. Our Amica Rush Hour Series that takes place on four early Friday evenings presents short, informal, accessible classical concerts with repertoire from the Saturday Classical concerts. Our four Open Rehearsals offer audience members insight into the collaboration between the conductor, guest artists and orchestra musicians as they prepare for the upcoming classical concert.
We are joined by the Providence Singers again this season for a performance of Messiah in December. Our partnership with the Providence Performing Arts Center, POPS-PHIL-PPAC, enters its sixth season presenting Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti in March at PPAC. Legendary soprano Renée Fleming joins the Orchestra for a Gala celebration of the newly renovated Vets. Francisco Noya conducts our Education Concerts, Pops Series and our Summer Pops. Philharmonic on Fire!, the Orchestra’s performance at WaterFire and the 4th of July concert at India Point Park were highlights of this past summer’s activities.
